John, the Red Ensign isn’t a “second” flag. It was the main flag everyday Australians flew for the first half of our history — the one our diggers carried into battle, the one draped over the coffins of the fallen.
The Blue Ensign was reserved for government use. Ordinary people weren’t even allowed to fly it until the 1950s. That’s why the Red Ensign became the people’s flag.
This isn’t about division. It’s about remembering where we came from — and refusing to let our history be smeared or forgotten.
One nation? Absolutely. But that nation was built under both the Blue and the Red.
If your ever passing through Newcastle NSW Pay homage to the ANZACs at the Cathedral. Within this Wonderful Building rests the Birdwood Flag.
