With the 2026 election approaching, it’s time to revisit that record — and ask whether the same political tactics are being deployed again.

Kavel is not just any electorate.

It is one of South Australia’s fastest-growing regions, spanning the Adelaide Hills from Mount Barker and Nairne through to Woodside and Lobethal.

Growth changes politics.

More residents.
More infrastructure demand.
More pressure on State funding.

Growth changes demographics. New estates bring younger families, first-home buyers, commuters and new arrivals which over time, can reshape the voting base. Once a growth seat shifts, it can be very difficult to shift back.

Now consider the infrastructure reality.

The Mount Barker area particularly, carries significant infrastructure baggage — a wastewater funding gap, and increasing traffic congestion due to lack of State planning and incomplete road infrastructure. These are structural issues requiring State funding and State action.

Many of these pressures stem from a significant land rezoning decision made in 2010 by a former Labor government.

Growth was driven at the State level through a 1,310-hectare land release while the planning and infrastructure required to support was overlooked.

Back then, Labor pledged $260 million for infrastructure however none was delivered. Adjusted for inflation, that figure would be significantly higher today.

And that is why political alignment becomes critical.

Kavel has always been a stable blue ribbon seat, but then something changed.

The Member: Dan Cregan MP

Four years ago, Kavel shifted — though you could be forgiven for not fully recognising it at the time, because the label never changed.

Dan Cregan was elected as a Liberal member in 2018. In 2020, he resigned from the party, moved to the crossbench as an independent, and was shortly thereafter appointed Speaker of the House.

Re-elected in 2022 as an independent, he later joined the Labor Government’s Cabinet in 2024 as Minister for Police, Emergency Services and Correctional Services.

That’s a significant shift. One with direct consequences.

When a previously Liberal, then independent member moves from the crossbench into the Speaker’s chair and then into the Labor Cabinet, alignment with government is no longer theoretical — it’s embedded.

At that point, the “independent” label under which Dan Cregan was elected became effectively meaningless and any leverage vanished.

The practical effect was that one of the state’s rapidly expanding electorates no longer had an opposition-style member applying sustained pressure to the sitting government, despite the significant infrastructure needs of the region.

In practice, a member closely aligned with the sitting Government cannot credibly apply sustained pressure to it.

The Mayor: David Leach

Likewise, in 2022, David Leach was elected Mayor of the Mount Barker District Council as a candidate presenting as independent.

During the Mayor’s term, no significant State-funded infrastructure improvements have been secured, and visible advocacy at the State level has been limited.

In fact, advocacy from the Council CEO and staff since the Mayor went on leave has been noticeably more visible and more effective than during the prior three years.

Now, three years into the term, the Mayor has taken leave and is running as the Labor candidate for Kavel. This shift directly invites reflection and scrutiny of alignment and advocacy over the previous three years.

Alignment without delivery has consequences.

With this level of representation in the region, should it really surprise anyone that Mount Barker’s infrastructure needs remain largely unresolved?

SA Labor’s Playbook

Mount Barker’s infrastructure backlog was never going to be solved in a single term.

What should have been visible early in the term was a coherent, publicly articulated plan. One backed with effective advocacy and tangible outcomes.

That clarity has not materialised.

The lack of tangible outcomes is precisely why Kavel matters politically, and why Labor has every incentive to secure it.

Labor would hardly want to lose their comfortable arrangement and have their feet held to the fire by a true independent or an opposing party.

If Labor forms government and holds Kavel, they can:

• Align the local MP with the party governing the state

• Control funding announcements and manage the timing and narrative of delivery

• Align any meaningful commitments with election cycles to reinforce the cycle

• Stage or drip-feed solutions to maintain political advantage

If Labor holds government but does not hold Kavel, the dynamic changes.

• Every delay becomes ammunition.

• Every funding gap becomes leverage.

• Every infrastructure failure becomes a live accountability issue in a fast-growing electorate.

This is the strategic reality.

A fast-growing seat with unresolved infrastructure is politically powerful.

In independent or opposition hands, it applies pressure.
In government-aligned hands, it becomes manageable — protecting the status quo

Clearly, strong representation independent of the State Government is best for the region and for those directly affected by the unresolved infrastructure issues.

The Danger Zone

Now it’s time to ask the obvious questions.

Q: Is the Labor party/candidate discussing the hard issues around wastewater and road infrastructure?
A: No.

Q: Is the Labor party/candidate putting firm, structural funding commitments on the table?
A: No.

This tells the real story.

Instead, Labor is offering distractions and list padding. A 24x7 pharmacy in the region may be nice to have, but it avoids addressing the serious infrastructure issues and funding gap that is really needed.

This also raises an interesting side question. Why is the State Government intervening in what is fundamentally a private sector supply and demand issue, using taxpayer funds to subsidise a 24x7 pharmacy?

Public trust was severely strained when SA Labor overrode both community and council concerns when it proceeded with the 2010 land release without appropriate planning and infrastructure. Now the focus appears to be shifting away from accountability for the long-term consequences of that decision.

At the end of the day, it’s about whether Kavel allows itself to be bought off with platitudes, or becomes a region that demands real commitments and real solutions.

This standard applies to every candidate seeking to represent Kavel. Alignment and leverage matter — regardless of party label.

Be mindful, and be purposeful with your vote.
The outcome of this election will shape the region for decades to come.

A Note on Perspective

If you’ve stumbled across this post on social media or had it shared with you, you may wonder who I am.

I’m an Adelaide Hills dweller, and until recently, have been mostly a political observer. But that changed in December 2025 when I was elected as a Councillor on Mount Barker District Council to represent the township of Hahndorf and broader South Ward.

While I have not specifically mentioned the infrastructure needs of South Ward in this post, they are very much front of mind. State funding gaps have created a council that is significantly under-resourced in addressing broader state-driven shortfalls. Resolving those gaps would naturally free up resources that would benefit South Ward. Similarly to Mount Barker itself, South Ward infrastructure issues also require significant State investment.

The Australia Red Flags have been dragged into negative press around the recent March for Australia. Yet these flags long predate hashtags and media spin.

The story is older, prouder — and woven into our national fabric.

A Flag of Federation and War

When Australia federated in 1901, two flags were chosen:

• Blue Ensign — for government and naval use.

• Red Ensign — for civil naval use on merchant ships.

But there was another flag widely flown on land: the Red Standard, also known as the Federal Land Flag.

This was the land-based counterpart — raised at schools, town halls, and community gatherings. It became the flag many Australians identified with through both World Wars.

While the Red Ensign sailed with our merchant navy, the Red Standard flew at home and was often seen alongside our soldiers in camps, parades, and memorials.

For Australians of that era, these red flags weren’t fringe or divisive. They were familiar markers of unity and sacrifice.

It wasn’t until 1953–54 that the Blue Ensign was formally elevated as the national flag for general use. By then, the Red Standard had already left a deep footprint in our nation’s history.

Still Recognised, Still Ours

The Red Ensign remains an official Australian flag under the Flags Act 1953 — its proper use today being on Australian registered merchant and civil vessels. (link)

That said, every Australian has the right to fly it on land as well. You’ll still see it at sea, in ports, and at commemorations. Veterans honour it, merchant seafarers use it, and ordinary Australians raise it with pride.

The Red Standard (Federal Land Flag), by contrast, no longer has official standing. It survives as a historical flag — one that flew across schools, town halls, and community groups, and was present through both World Wars.

Neither are fringe. One is law, the other a vital piece of our nations history.

A Narrative Hijack

In recent years, the Red Flags have reappeared at rallies and marches. Cue the predictable headlines: “fringe,” “far-right,” “extremist.”

But here’s the truth:

A flag’s meaning cannot be rewritten by journalists — No matter how they choose to spin it.
The Red flags — are not partisan flags.

When they redefine a flag, they’re not just attacking cloth — they’re attempting to rewrite who we are.

To smear it is to smear our own national identity and the memory of Australians who lived and died under it.

Why It Matters

Our national symbols belong to all Australians, not to media spin doctors.

The Red Standard is not a relic of division — it is a living reminder of our beginnings, our service, and our sacrifice. A reminder of a time when our nation was valued as more than the sum of its parts.

When Australians fly red flags today, they’re not signalling extremism.
They’re honouring our history — and their patriotism.

And here’s the warning: those who forget their history are destined to repeat it.

If we allow our national symbols to be stolen or smeared, we allow our story to be rewritten — and with it, our future to be reshaped.

This isn’t about nostalgia. It’s about truth.
A nation that forgets its symbols forgets itself.

If we allow them to redefine a flag, we open the door to them redefining anything. That’s how control works.

Faith, family, and nationhood don’t survive when truth is up for grabs.

The Red Ensign and Red Standard are not fringe.
They represent current and historic Australia.

Push Back With Pride

If you want to push back against the smear, don’t argue — fly it. Talk about it.

Remind people that Red flags are as Australian as the Blue.
The more they’re seen, the harder they are to dismiss.

And when you hear it dismissed as “fringe,” correct it and use it an opportunity to share some of our nation’s history.

Truth is always the antidote to spin.

My Personal Connection

I fly the Federal Land Flag on my own property out of pride in our heritage, nothing more and nothing less.

To me, it symbolises a time when the balance between government and the people felt healthier.

When Australia was sovereign and looked after its own.
A time when people were prepared to fight for their country.
A time when ordinary families could afford a home.

It also recalls the spirit of the ANZACs — ordinary men and women who stood for country, community, and mateship.

It’s a time and spirit we desperately need back in this country.

Page 1, 4: Bee Backlash

How gracious of council to ‘allow’ residents a say on whether they can keep chooks, bees, or livestock on their own land. In a region built on hobby farms, smallholdings, and self-reliance, this isn’t “consultation” — it’s government overreach with a bow on top.

Where exactly does council get off telling ratepayers how they can use their own property? The Hills lifestyle has always been about space, self-sufficiency, and the freedom to manage your patch as you see fit. When 89% of locals say the idea stinks, the only “further consultation” needed is a shovel — to bury this by-law for good.

If this isn’t what residents have asked for, then who exactly is pushing it?
The push certainly isn’t coming from the 89% who opposed it. That leaves a very small minority — or perhaps a mindset in council that thinks the Hills lifestyle needs ‘managing’.

Councillors should spend less time policing henhouses and beehives, and more time fixing roads, parking, and the issues people actually care about.

From Control to Common Sense

P5: Multi-dwelling blocks proposed

The State Government’s Future Living Code says you might be “allowed” to build an extra dwelling on your own property — provided the councils think it’s viable, appropriate, and in keeping with “the character” they’ve decided you all love.

What the council fails to mention are the genuine factors that need to be weighed here: the Hills’ role as a critical watershed area, the importance of preserving amenity, and the traffic and infrastructure pressures that come with increased density. These are real considerations — not just excuses to clamp down.

Councils need to switch from “control” mode — where every opportunity is taken to control what ratepayers can do with their land — back to genuine planning, something that seems to have been lost long ago.

From Beehives to Backyards to Browsers — The Net Keeps Tightening

👉 I’ve only reached page 6 and this week’s Courier has already served up two very different stories — but scratch the surface and you’ll find the same thread running through them: more rules, more hoops, and more control over how we live.

• “Bee Backlash” (Pages 1, 4).

• Multi-dwelling “test case” (Page 5).

Now we learn from my “Papers Please” submission that under-16s will be banned from social media without Digital ID from December. Sold as “protecting kids,” it’s another step toward normalising ID checks for online access — the infrastructure for mass surveillance by another name. This is about control, not safety.

Whether it’s your bees, your backyard, or your browser, the pattern is clear: more of your choices are being decided elsewhere. And unless more people push back, the only thing guaranteed to be “protected” is the power of those making the rules.

So I’m off topic — back to the other letters.

Pointless rules: A letter challenging the E&RD court’s ability to overrule the Council Assessment Panel. It’s worrying that those with money and power can bend the system to get what they want.

Future predictions: A slightly rambling submission from G Inkster calling out decades of failed climate alarmist claims.

Good news: A letter full of “renewables” claims that can be dismantled with ease. Sadly, the only good news here is that Donella isn’t running our energy policy — otherwise Chris Bowen would have some real competition.

When Council Can’t Even Council

Page 10: Councillors walk out on meeting

Mt Barker Council’s August 4 meeting collapsed when the Mayor, Deputy Mayor, and two councillors walked out before a confidential item could be debated. Two more councillors followed soon after, leaving no quorum and forcing the meeting to be postponed — twice.

From the outside, it’s not hard to see council as opaque and largely free from accountability to the ratepayers. Factions and cultural dysfunction appear to be alive and well — and while residents are tied up in debates over bees, backyards, and housing, the chamber itself can’t seem to keep its own house in order.

Before we go too far, let me say this clearly:

This is not a Star Trek hit piece — I’m actually a huge fan.

From an entertainment point of view, I’ve always found the series captivating — especially The Next Generation and many of the series and spin offs that followed.

What follows isn’t an attack on the franchise. It’s a personal reflection. A closer look at the future it portrayed — and the one we may already be living in.

And yes, I’m asking a little indulgence from the non-Trekkies out there. Even if you’ve never seen an episode, I think you’ll still find this… oddly relevant.

So, get ready to take your mind to the final frontier.
To explore strange new thoughts, to seek out new perspectives.
To boldly go where it’s never gone before.

My Personal Connection

When I was younger, Star Trek seemed like the most optimistic vision of the future I’d ever seen. Not just in its tone — though that certainly helped — but in its sense of clarity and freedom.

As someone drawn to engineering and technology, I was captivated by the tools and ideas the show put on screen.

In the ’80s, when very little technology existed, I found myself imagining a world where we had access to the tech Star Trek portrayed:
mobile tablet devices, computers you could talk to, artificial intelligence.

These weren’t just props — they were prototypes. The future they depicted didn’t just feel possible; it felt inevitable. And while we still can’t jump to warp, much of the technology has quietly stepped off the screen and into our lives.

Back then, I wasn’t watching for political ideals like “a united humanity” or “the end of poverty.”

I watched it for the tech. The story lines. The time travel.
The paradoxes. The ideas. The imagination.
The sense of duty to something greater than yourself.

That’s what drew me in.

But looking back now — and watching where our real-world trajectory is heading
— I can’t help but see it all a little differently.

Fiction as Prototype

One thing I’ve come to understand:

Fiction has always been used to prototype the future.

Not just imagine it — but sell it.

Star Trek gave us a prototype. A world where conflict had been all but erased. Where governments are planetary, not national. Where people are assigned roles, not born into them. Where a single ideology, a single set of values, and a single vision for humanity is enforced through structure, consensus, and surveillance.

And like all good prototypes, it was introduced through fiction — where mental and moral resistance is low, because it’s not real.

Our defences are down. We’re not questioning motives or policies — we’re immersed in the storyline. We’re open to wherever the writers want to take us, and in many cases, we’re begging them to keep us hooked as a distraction from the pressures of our daily lives.

But what we don’t realise is that even fiction leaves residue.
Ideas go in — and parts of them stick.

The Federation Template

The United Federation of Planets is presented as a utopia — the culmination of human evolution, post-scarcity economics, and global unity. But let’s strip away the glow of nostalgia and take a clearer look.

This isn’t a vision of diversity. It’s uniformity.
This isn’t a future of freedom. It’s management.
This isn’t the decentralisation of power. It’s total consolidation.

Below are some of the most striking parallels between the Federation ideal and the system quietly being assembled around us.

Global unity at the expense of national sovereignty

In Star Trek, Earth is no longer a planet of nations — it’s a single unified entity.

Flags, borders, and national identities have disappeared, folded into the Federation. At first glance, that sounds like peace. In reality, it’s control.

There’s no real choice when there’s only one voice.

Today’s push toward global governance — through the UN, WEF, WHO, and other unelected bodies like the EU — mirrors this.

National sovereignty is being whittled away, replaced with treaties, directives, and frameworks that no one ever voted for.

The Federation model doesn’t just predict this — it normalises it.

The Illusion of Abundance

One of the more seductive traits of the Star Trek universe is its portrayal of limitless provision. Nobody wants for anything.

Food, housing, clothing, transport — all are available, all are free.
Replicators satisfy every need.
Money doesn’t seem to exist.
Greed and personal ambition have been engineered out of the human experience.

It sounds noble — until you realise the cost of such abundance is absolute dependence.

When everything is provided for you by the system, you’re no longer free — you’re sustained. And sustained on its terms.

Gratitude slowly replaces autonomy.
Compliance replaces risk.
Dissent becomes irrational when every material need is met.

Why complain about freedom when you’ve got everything you need?

We’re already living in the early prototype:

Social welfare, government funded health care, housing co-ownership — all policies that already align with this narrative.

You no longer own software — you subscribe to it.
Movies, music, and books? You lease access until the platform decides you can’t.
Cars are rolling out with features locked behind monthly payments.
Even farm equipment is moving to pay-per-use models, where “ownership” is subject to manufacturer permission.

This is life by subscription. A digital leash dressed up as convenience.

It’s the illusion of abundance — but with none of the freedom that true ownership brings.

You’ll own nothing — and be grateful for it — apparently.

The Four Pillars of Control

Surveillance — with your permission

In Star Trek, privacy barely exists. The computer hears everything. Sees everything. Knows everything. You’re monitored for your own good. Tracked for the sake of efficiency, health, and duty.

It’s not presented as surveillance.
It’s just… the way things are.

Sound familiar?

Today, under the banner of “safety” and “convenience,” we’re being offered digital ID systems, centralised medical records, smart homes, facial recognition —
all for our own good.

Except it’s not really offered, is it?

We’re being nudged. Incentivised. Eventually, coerced.
Not by guns — but by systems — and through social engineeering.

Welcome to the Federation — powered by Amazon, Google, and your Government of course. Even your government’s very own Ministry of Online Safety gets a seat at the table.

Faith — replaced by ideology

There’s no religion in Star Trek. No visible faith. No higher moral law.
The Federation stands in place of all that — a secular, progressive ideology that claims moral superiority and universal truth.

In the real world, we’re watching Christianity — and other traditional belief systems be slowly sidelined. Or not so slowly, depending on where you are in the world.

The new doctrines? Climate salvation, identity worship, safety absolutism.

The Federation doesn’t tolerate competing truths.
Neither does the modern technocratic state.

You can believe — as long as it's not the kind of belief that challenges theirs.

But what is safety absolutism, I hear you ask?

It’s the belief that safety — physical, emotional, psychological — should override all other considerations. Freedom. Truth. Risk. Conscience.
Even basic human interaction.

Everything becomes subject to one question: is it safe?

But Safety absolutism doesn’t stop at protecting people.
It begins to manage them. Restrict them. Silence them.

Until eventually, anything that challenges the system is treated as a threat.

Under this new doctrine, harmful and dangerous no longer mean a form of violence — they simply mean non-compliant.

And the solution is always more control.

Family is absent — or absorbed

How many stable, present families do you see in Star Trek? Almost none.

Characters are often rootless. Children are raised communally. Biological bonds are replaced with team allegiances or mentorship.

In today’s world, we’re watching the same erosion:

State systems step in where parents once stood.
The idea of mother and father is reframed as outdated.
Two incomes are now essential just to keep a roof overhead
— let alone food on the table.

And of course, childcare is always available. Not because the state cares, but because they don’t want parents shaping their children’s worldview. That would waste a prime opportunity to feed them the “approved” narrative from the earliest possible age.

A strong family is a threat to any system that demands total loyalty.

A united family provides a competing centre of gravity — built on love, shared experience, and deep interdependence.

That’s why it must be weakened.

Nationhood erased — patriotism outlawed

There’s no patriotic fervour in Star Trek. No national holidays. No honouring of unique traditions. Earth is just one indistinct member of the greater Federation.

That’s the ideal: post-national identity.

But without nationhood, there’s nothing to fight for.
Nothing to defend. Nothing to belong to.

Today’s globalist vision mirrors it perfectly.

Erase borders, dilute traditions, make patriotism a dirty word.

We see it playing out now:
— The suppression and rewriting of colonial history.
— The quiet disownment of national days of commemoration.
— The hijacking of indigenous narratives for globalist agendas.
— Cultural erosion through unchecked mass immigration of incompatible cultures.

The result isn’t unity. It’s rootlessness.

And rootlessness doesn’t bind — it isolates, it scatters, it sets adrift.

Duty, Obedience, & Death of Conscience

One of the most celebrated traits in the Star Trek universe is duty. The officers of Starfleet are disciplined, principled, and deeply committed to their mission.

They serve without hesitation. Orders are followed. Protocol is respected. The system works because everyone believes in the cause.

It’s painted as noble — and in many ways, it is.

But stop and ask:
Duty to what?
Who defines the mission?
Who decides what’s right?

Because when duty becomes detached from conscience — from God, from truth, from any authority higher than the institution — it becomes something else entirely.

It becomes obedience.

And that’s the version of duty we see in Star Trek:
Unwavering service to the system itself.

The Federation is the moral compass.
It defines good. It defines evil.
It sets the mission.
Your job is to follow it — with honour, of course.

Real-world mirror:
The growing expectation that we will do what’s asked
— not because it’s right, but because it’s policy.

Sign this. Accept that. Get the jab. Register the ID. Don't question the science.
Don’t challenge the narrative. Don’t hesitate.

You’re not forced — you’re simply told it’s the right thing to do
For the greater good of course.
And if you resist, you’re not just wrong — you’re selfish. Dangerous.
Non-compliance becomes a moral failing.

The entire framework shifts:

• Conscience is replaced by compliance.

• Groupthink is rewarded.

• Virtue becomes following orders.

• Dissent becomes disloyalty.

In this light, duty is no longer a personal commitment to higher values — it’s an administrative virtue.

You’re good if you conform.
You’re good if you obey.
You’re good if you don’t ask why.

And history has demonstrated — again and again — that when duty is stripped of conscience, the worst crimes are committed by people who were “just doing their job.”

Without conscience, we’re just cogs — useful, quiet, and compliant.

A Visual Plant

It’s worth pointing out that the logo of the Federation and that of the United Nations are eerily similar.

Same blue and white colour scheme. Same laurel wreath. Same central globe.
Coincidence? Maybe.

But visual language matters. It embeds. It imprints.

Over time, it makes the unfamiliar look familiar
— and that, in turn, makes it easier to accept.

The Moral Colonialism of the Future

This is one area I debated whether to include — but the more I thought about it, the more I realised it belongs here.

The Federation often presents itself as a force for good — spreading peace, enlightenment, and values across the galaxy.
But it does so by deciding who is ready, who is worthy, and who needs to be observed, managed, or gently steered.

It’s the same story we’ve seen play out in real life, again and again:
One dominant power — often the United States — claiming to be the bearer of democracy, showing up in foreign lands, and deciding what’s best for others.

These efforts are rarely framed as domination.
They’re called exporting democracy. Peacekeeping.
Different words — same playbook.
Straight from the soft-power propaganda manual.

This isn’t diplomacy.
It’s moral colonialism.

The Federation evaluates the locals, then decides if they’re ready to be included in “the future.”
And if they’re not?
They’re monitored. Managed.
Or quietly manipulated until they comply — or collapse.

It’s the story of building an empire — just with better branding.

“I’m from the government, and I’m here to help.”

That line should make your skin crawl — whether it’s coming from a House of Parliament, the White House or the bridge of a starship.

The Pillars to Push Back

We’re not on the bridge of the Enterprise.
But the world around us is beginning to feel eerily familiar — shaped by the same assumptions, driven by the same themes, built on the same unchallenged ideals.

If we don’t want this managed future, we need a foundation for something better.

I believe there are four pillars we must return to and defend:

• Christian faith — not vague spirituality, not “belief in something,” but faith in a higher authority that transcends government, science, and self. A moral foundation rooted in absolute truth — not consensus. The kind of faith that speaks truth to power, even when it costs something.

• Family — not a bureaucratic unit, but the bedrock of civilisation. A source of love, strength, shared memory, and moral formation. Family teaches us loyalty, identity, and responsibility — everything the state struggles to replicate and increasingly tries to override.

• Nationhood — not just a legal jurisdiction, but a shared home. Something to belong to. Something to defend. Patriotism, culture, and camaraderie — forged through common history and hard-won freedom. A sovereign identity that can’t be replaced by a slogan or a global flag.

• Conscience — the moral compass placed in each of us. Not a rulebook, but the God-given ability to discern right from wrong — even when it conflicts with law, policy, or public opinion. Conscience is what makes resistance human — and without it, obedience becomes a machine.

These are not just values. They are threats to the system that seeks to replace them. That’s why they’re under attack.

Final Thoughts

Star Trek offers a seductive dream.
But dreams can become traps — especially when we mistake fiction for intention and prophecy for progress. When social engineering slips past our defences, unnoticed.

In their future, we’re told resistance is futile.
In ours, it might be the only thing that saves us.

We must reframe everything that’s been placed before us — and recognise that non-compliance may be the greatest virtue of all.

Reflection

You can read my recent Ground Control post for an overview of who is running for Councillor vacancies across the Adelaide Hills in the upcoming supplementary election.

For me, this isn’t a career move or a political stepping stone. The honest truth is, I never pictured myself doing this. But like many, I think there’s room for improvement — especially on the things that really matter to the community.

Rates are up, roads and footpaths need attention, and the region faces serious traffic and parking issues — especially Hahndorf.

Rather than stay on the sidelines, I decided it was time to step up and try to make a difference.

I’m a small business operator of 25 years, currently based on Hahndorf’s main street. If elected, I’ll bring the same approach I use in business and life — questioning assumptions, thinking practically and ethically, applying good management, offering straight answers, and serving the community with a strong voice for our townships.

Hahndorf has been my home for over 20 years. I’ve raised a family here, run a business, and been an active contributor through the Hahndorf Community Association and other local groups.

I’ve spoken up when things haven’t made sense — and I’ll continue to do so in council.

If elected, I will:

• Challenge unnecessary spending to keep rates down.

• Focus on essentials: roads, rubbish, and core services.

• Focus on traffic and parking solutions in Hahndorf and across Mount Barker.

• Push for infrastructure improvements across the entire ward and district.

• Apply practical, solutions-focused thinking to issues facing the community.

• Listen, engage, and strongly advocate for what matters most to residents and ratepayers.

Q: Some have asked: Why stand for Mount Barker Council instead of Adelaide Hills Council?

A: The answer is twofold:

1. My home sits within both council areas, so I could technically stand for either. But given my long association with Hahndorf — for both home and business — Mount Barker Council was the obvious choice. After 22 years here, I want to see the township’s heritage preserved and long standing issues resolved, and the best way to do that is to have a seat at the table. South Ward is made up of townships that are distinctly different from the growing metropolis of Mount Barker itself. The ward needs strong representation to ensure it’s not overlooked.

2. There are other strong candidates standing for the vacancies in the Adelaide Hills Council wards, and I didn’t want to get in their way. For those in the Adelaide Hills Council area, you can see my specific candidate endorsements in this post.

Well, here we go — you're hearing it here first.

After a lot of thought, I've decided to throw my hat in the ring and run for Councillor in the Mount Barker District Council.

This isn’t a grand career move. Truth is, I never pictured myself doing this. But like many of you, I'm tired of watching council lose focus — rates up, roads crumbling, and the basics getting sidelined for the latest shiny distraction.

So rather than just keep pointing out the issues from the sidelines, I figured it was time to step in and attempt to make a difference.

If elected, I’ll bring the same approach I take to everything else — practical thinking, straight answers, and a strong voice for the townships. Especially Hahndorf, which has been my home for over 20 years. I've raised a family here, run a local business, and spoken up more than a few times when things haven't made sense.

I’ll be standing on a platform of:

• Getting back to basics: roads, rubbish, real services

• Pushing back on waste and nonsense to keep our rates down

• Continuing the work to address traffic and parking issues in Hahndorf

• Advocating for infrastructure improvements (particularly roads) in Mount Barker

• Speaking plainly, voting wisely, and listening properly

No spin, no party lines, no interest in climbing the political ladder.

Mt Barker's Missing Roadmap

P1, 9: Mt Barker roads gridlocked

Another report. Another headline. Another slap of bureaucratic jargon admitting what every local already knows — the roads around Mt Barker are a mess.

To her credit, Cr Rebecca Hewitt is one of the few on council actually fighting to get this issue addressed — and this latest report wouldn’t exist without her motion. She's been a strong and sensible voice, and I’m grateful for the support she’s shown as I put my hand up to run.

But still — a three-stage network modelling project? Really? You don’t need to model when the issues slap you in the face every time you try to cross town during peak hour.

You can’t fix a traffic jam with a flowchart.

The problems are obvious: inadequate turning lanes and arterial roads pushed well past their limits. Meanwhile, ratepayers are expected to sit tight while the consultants get paid to confirm what we already know.

Mt Barker is growing fast, and that means practical, immediate infrastructure upgrades need to be front and centre. Not buried in stages of analysis.

Digging for Solutions

P1 & P8: Cultivating Food Security

Growing your own food. Sharing with neighbours. Reducing waste. Building community. These are the kinds of grassroots initiatives that actually make sense — simple, tangible, and good for the soul.

So why does it always have to come wrapped in UN branding?

According to the article, backyard veggie patches now serve the United Nations 2030 sustainability goals. Who knew growing a tomato was a geopolitical act?

That’s not a swipe at the local effort — in fact, it’s refreshing to see something practical getting attention. The Grow Free movement is doing what government programs rarely do: empowering people to solve real problems, one garden at a time.

But it’s curious how the UN manages to insert itself into even the most personal parts of daily life — food, transport, energy, education. Always guiding. Always “partnering.” Always present.

Here’s a radical thought: maybe local solutions don’t need global supervision. Maybe what really works is letting communities do what they’ve always done — grow, share, and look after their own.

Smoke and Mirrors — or the First Step Toward Regulation?

P3: Smoke Tainted Air

Mt Barker’s winter air quality is under the microscope, with wood smoke flagged as a growing concern. Fair enough — burning wet or unseasoned wood does create excess smoke and health risks. But let’s not pretend this is just about neighbourly awareness.

We’ve seen this playbook before — highlight a problem, stir the stats, then nudge toward restrictions. It starts with awareness campaigns and ends with regulation.
Gas cooktops, anyone?

With firewood prices through the roof, many households are just doing what they can to stay warm. The real solution isn’t more monitoring or guilt campaigns — it’s education on proper firewood use, and tackling cost pressures that lead people to burn whatever they can get.

If there’s a genuine desire to reduce smoke, let’s focus on practical support — not policy overreach. And in the meantime, let’s keep the home fires burning — responsibly.

Behaviour Strategy? More Like Behavioural Surrender

P4: School behavior strategy concerns

It seems the State Government’s one-size-fits-all behaviour model is failing — and no one wants to admit it. The Berry Street approach might look good in theory, but when schools are “imploding” and six-year-olds are attacking teachers, we have a problem that needs more than trauma-informed theory.

What we’re seeing is the hollowing out of authority in the classroom. Teachers and principals no longer have the tools — or permission — to deal with serious behavioural issues. Decision-making has been hijacked by bureaucrats pushing ideologically approved solutions instead of practical ones.

This isn’t just poor policy — it’s a systemic failure to protect students and staff. When education becomes more about appeasing policy writers than equipping teachers, everyone suffers.

Housing Crisis? Try Planning Crisis.

P5: Council to explore housing solutions

Another strategy. Another consultant. Another report.

Mt Barker Council is now “exploring housing solutions” after overseeing the fastest growing suburb in the state — without the infrastructure or planning to match. 715 new lots in 12 months, but somehow we’re only now acknowledging the lack of affordable housing, crisis accommodation, and basic services.

To be fair, the State Government did designate Mt Barker as a growth area — they just forgot to fund the growth and plan the infrastructure. So if Council wants to use this strategy to finally drag some money out of Adelaide, that’s not the worst idea going.

But let’s not pretend this is a fix. Until we get planning that actually anticipates demand — not reacts to it five years too late — we’ll keep patching holes with glossy PDFs and consultant buzzwords.

Signals from the Letters Page

Page 6: Your View

👉 If the solution to every problem is lentils and the UN, the letters page didn’t disappoint.

Proud of Our Scientists: Myrana Wahlqvist returns this week with a passionate defence of “the science” — dismissing dissent as anti-reality, anti-science, or worse, conspiracy.

She writes that there is “no UN-led conspiracy for worldwide domination” and “no worldwide cult of climate change” — which, oddly, weren’t claims anyone had made. But it’s a neat trick: exaggerate opposing views, and declare them unworthy of debate.

She also mocks those that believe “global agendas are quietly shaping local policy”.

Meanwhile, Australia recently signed the WHO Pandemic Treaty and failed to reject the UN & WHO-led International Health Regulation (IHR) amendments. Oh, and we're still going full tilt for the UN-led Net Zero agenda
— but sure, nothing to see here.

Let’s be clear — scientists deserve respect. But that doesn’t mean institutions are beyond scrutiny, or that policies based on “the science” are automatically just.
It seems clear, Myrana trusts the system absolutely. The rest of us have seen too much mission drift, politicisation, and outright manipulation to do the same.

Lettuce Pray: The letters from Padma Chaplin and Alice Shore this week read like a sermon from the Church of Climate Veganism. Calls to shut down meatworks and transform them to pump out plant-based meat, all in the name of “kindness” and “the greater good.” It’s the usual rhetoric — less beef, more beans, and a moral pat on the back for complying. My reply: pass the steak.

Peter Spalding offers the rare voice of reason — pointing out the absurdity of governments spending hundreds of millions on climate plans while ignoring basic stormwater upgrades. He's right. If we can’t even fix drains after a known flood risk, how can we pretend to control the climate?

More Targets, Less Logic

P12: Mt Barker Council sets new climate targets

The Mt Barker Council has officially signed up to its own miniature version of Net Zero — pledging to slash CO₂ emissions from 234,000 to 164,000 tonnes by 2035, and halve its own output by 2050. How? With a 28-page strategy, a $60,000 report, and enough vague commitments that are ultimately meaningless.

All this while the rest of the world is heading in the other direction and the momentum against Net Zero is finally gaining traction within Australia.

Let’s be clear — this isn’t about cleaner streets or smarter planning. It’s about chasing abstract emission targets, riddled with assumptions and enforced through bureaucratic creep. Because nothing says “sustainability” like pushing ratepayers to foot the bill for climate assessments, recycled water audits, and tree canopy quotas.

And what exactly is an “acceptable level” of climate risk to council operations? That’s never defined. But rest assured, another review is coming in five years — and annual progress updates will be provided (whether you asked or not).

Meanwhile, the roads are crumbling, parking is impossible, and essential infrastructure remains underfunded. But sure — let’s cut emissions from council mowers.

This isn’t governance. It’s virtue signalling with a grant application attached.

In all honesty, it’s outcomes like this that have inspired me to stand for Council.

Politics, Power, and the Public Purse

P13: Local couple sues Premier for $2.3m

I know nothing of this story — but my Spidey senses sure are tingling.

A former Labor MP sues our golden boy Premier Peter Malinauskas for $2.3 million, alleging he sabotaged her career to bury claims of bullying and harassment. Meanwhile, she was found guilty of blackmailing him — but never sentenced. Charges dropped. Suppression orders in place. Everyone walks.

Recap: Australia still has a choice — but not for long

The deadline for implementation is set for December 2025.

If this system goes ahead, you'll need to prove who you are — not just to speak, but to search, learn, and stay informed.

This Bill isn’t about keeping teens off social media. It’s about building the gate, issuing the passes, and deciding who gets to enter the public square.

And it doesn’t stop at surveillance.
It rewires what children know — and what they’re allowed to learn.
It conditions how young voters think.
And it narrows the spectrum of thought until consensus is the only safe answer.

Once built, it won’t be dismantled.
Once normalised, it won’t be questioned.

So, the real question isn’t whether this proposal goes too far.
It’s whether we’re willing to live in a country where access to information is permission-based — and the next generation never knew it was any other way.

Do you really think they could pass a Digital ID law through the front door? Through honest debate? With public consent?

Of course not. And they know it.

Back in 1987, the government tried to introduce the Australia Card via referendum
— and the public gave them a resounding “no.”

And this time, they’re trying to sneak it in through the back door.
Same agenda — sneakier route.

They didn’t ask.
They didn’t explain.
They didn’t debate it.
And they sure as hell didn’t get consent.

And what about Labor’s broken election promise on YouTube?

Before the election, Australians were told YouTube would be exempt.
But now? The eSafety Commissioner is using survey data — rather than real world statistical data — to justify its inclusion.

No debate. No transparency. Just a quiet reversal based on bureaucratic spin.

They lied to get elected.
And now they’re lying to justify the rollout.

These people have forfeited our trust.

Australians should take a long hard look at our motherland for a glimpse of what’s coming if we don’t push back. The UK’s Online Safety Bill and age-verification regime is already tightening access to information and free speech — with real-world consequences.

The fundamentals:

Any trust placed in our government regarding censorship is misplaced.

“She’ll be right, mate” is for suckers.

We weren’t born free just to be barcoded, scanned, and silenced.

It’s not quite that. Not across the board. What the Bill actually does is require platforms to take “reasonable steps” to stop under-16s from holding accounts. But without an account, most platforms become either crippled or useless:

– Facebook: effectively dead — no account, no access
– Instagram: Heavily restricted — you’ll see almost nothing without logging in
– YouTube: viewable, but no subscriptions, comments, uploads, or personalised recommendations
– TikTok: same — no interaction, no algorithmic feed

So while it’s not a blanket ban, for many platforms the effect is pretty close.

If this Bill can’t even do what it claims to — how can it be considered reasonable or justified?

Let’s be clear: the government’s stated justification — enforcing safety — doesn’t hold up under scrutiny.

The real goal? Digital ID — forced through the back door.

You don’t need a law degree to know this stinks. You just need the courage to speak plainly, ask the right questions, and not let them wriggle off the hook.

This Bill was never designed for safety. It was always about control.
And control only works when people stay quiet.

So speak up. Share this. Ask questions.
The moment we stop playing along — they start to lose their grip.

What Happened in the Senate?

In late July 2025, the fight against the Online Safety Bill entered a critical new phase — and a few Senators stood up when it mattered.

Step 1: The Urgency Motion ✅

Senators Ralph Babet (UAP) and Malcolm Roberts (One Nation) led the charge, tabling an urgency motion to force immediate attention on the dangers of the Online Safety Code — the hidden machinery behind Australia’s new age-verification regime.

Their goal was simple: force the issue onto the Senate’s agenda — and into the light.
And they succeeded.

The urgency motion passed, with all non-Labor Senators voting in favour.
Labor stood alone in opposition.

That should have been the spark for real scrutiny. But what happened next exposed just how deep the rot goes.

Step 2: The Inquiry Motion ❌

Days later, the same Senators — Babet and Roberts — introduced a formal motion to establish a Senate inquiry into the Online Safety Code.

This motion asked for a full investigation into:

• How the Code will affect Australians

• The powers granted to the eSafety Commissioner

• The implications for Digital ID, free speech, and online anonymity

But when the vote came...

The motion was voted down 34 to 27.

• Labor blocked it.

• The Greens joined them.

• And just like that — the public was denied the scrutiny it deserves.

• No transparency. No scrutiny. No debate.

Unfortunately, Jacqui Lambie was unavoidably absent as she would have likely been another supporter to the motion.

This Isn’t Good Enough

We’re not talking about hypothetical risks. The Bill is already law.
And now Labor and the Greens are trying to silence discussion around how it will be enforced.

The same politicians who backed the Bill now want to block the public from seeing what’s inside the machinery.

The motion — or a variation of it — can return.
But not until Australians have turned up the heat on those who voted it down.

This is where the power of the people comes in.
This is where you come in.

What We Can Do

It’s time to push back — publicly and directly. This isn’t about partisanship. It’s about transparency, parental rights, and digital freedom.

Here’s where pressure matters most:

• Greens Senators voted no. Contact them and demand an explanation. They claim to stand for civil liberties — yet voted to block scrutiny of a surveillance bill.
  That’s not progressive. That’s authoritarian.
  Whether you voted for them or not, they sit in our Senate. They work for all Australians. Hold them to account.

• Labor MPs and Senators need to hear — loudly — that this won’t fly under the radar. They backed this Bill. They blocked the inquiry.
  They own this outcome. Let them explain it.

• Jacqui Lambie was unfortunately absent for the last motion. Check in with her — ask that she support the inquiry at the next opportunity.

• Your local Federal member can’t vote in the Senate — but they can raise hell.
  Encourage them to use their voice.

It’s not all negative — we should thank and support those who stood up and did the right thing — like David Pocock and the LNP. Let them know it mattered. And that we need them to hold the line.

The next vote could happen any day. But only if there’s enough public pressure to bring it back.

• “Even if the intention was good, when has government surveillance ever stayed in its box?”
  (It hasn’t.)

• “Why are gaming and messaging platforms exempt?”
  (Because it was never about safety.)

• “If this is really about protecting kids, why doesn’t it block access to YouTube or violent content?”
  (Because children are the excuse — there is another agenda)

• “What exactly are those reasonable ‘steps’ the platforms must implement?”
  Why not drop the subterfuge and spell it out? Spoiler: Because it involves Digital ID and the government knows Australia would never accept a Digital ID bill.

Protecting kids? YouTube and porn are untouched. But private messaging? Banned.

They didn’t ask for your consent.
But you still have a voice. Use it.

The Rise of “Online Safety”

They say it’s about keeping kids safe from social media.
But under the Online Safety (Restricted Access Systems) Bill, every internet user in Australia would need to prove their age to go online.

Not to enter a casino. Not to buy cigarettes or alcohol.
Just to search. To access information. To use social media.
YouTube. Google. Facebook, Instagram, Messaging apps, even Wikipedia — all caught in the age-gated web.

But this is Australia.
We trust our government. She'll be right, won’t it?
After all, it’s just a small inconvenience to keep kids safe.
We all deserve to be safe don’t we?

Ask yourself: is safety what this is really about?

Here’s the reality:
To stop under-16s from posting on TikTok, they’re implementing a system that surveils everyone.

This isn’t a parental control setting you can switch off in conjunction with responsible parenting. Which begs the question — who is really raising our kids?

This is a national identity checkpoint.

And it’s coming — unless we the people stop it.
We fight back en masse — starting here.

Let’s be clear: this isn’t about safety.

“Safety” has become the go-to word to shut down debate and justify overreach. Once something is labelled unsafe — or someone is labelled a threat — there’s no room left for questions. It reframes resistance as dangerous and compliance as virtue.

But who decides what’s “safe”? And safe for whom?

This isn’t safety. It’s censorship in a cardigan.

How we got here — the 2024 season cliffhanger we missed

The eSafety Commissioner — otherwise known as eKaren — is a role dreamt up by the Liberal government back in 2015 to enforce online protection for children.

Now? That same office is pushing a bill that would force every Australian to prove their age before they can search, scroll, or speak online — a system that treats anonymity not as a right, but a risk.

It was introduced in November 2024 and rushed through both houses in just one week, with the final votes cast in the dead of night, after the parliamentary year had wrapped.

There was no fanfare. No press conference. No serious debate.

No meaningful opposition — where the hell was the opposition party?
Oh, that’s right. They don’t exist when it matters.
And they’re the ones who created this department in the first place.

The Bill was Guillotined, as they say — buried in the final sitting week to avoid public scrutiny, then passed as MPs slipped quietly into holiday mode.
Funny thing about “democracy” — we’re the ones paying for all this.

It was a season finale of the dystopian kind — and by the time the credits rolled, it was already law.

A law which states the minimum-age rules and age-verification mechanisms must be implemented by each of the affected platforms with a deadline of December 2025.

The infrastructure of control — built under the banner of safety

No matter how it’s pitched, age verification at scale means one thing: mandatory ID.
Not for logging into your bank account — but for asking a question online.

We’re not talking about a one-time check.
We’re talking about live, persistent verification:

• Upload your driver’s licence to watch a YouTube clip.

• Submit to facial scans or other biometrics to prove you're old enough.

• Agree to ongoing surveillance to stay logged in.

To be clear, the law doesn’t spell out the technical details — but it doesn’t take long to see where it leads. To verify age, a form of Digital ID becomes mandatory for all users of the internet.

In effect, this Bill pushes Digital ID onto every Australian — not by public consent, but by political convenience and stealth.

It’s not about keeping kids out. It’s about drawing everyone in.

Once your identity is linked to your search history, your viewing habits, your late-night curiosity — you’re no longer an anonymous citizen browsing the web.

You’re a data point in a controlled environment.

Today, the excuse is age.
Tomorrow, it could be health compliance, financial reputation — political risk.
The point is — the infrastructure will already be waiting.

They say it’s about children. But the net is designed to catch everyone.

No platform wants to risk massive fines or jail time for letting the wrong person through the gate.

So they’ll be forced to verify everyone — blanket checks, one-size-fits-all compliance.

This isn’t targeted enforcement — it’s pre-emptive surveillance.
And to enforce it, anonymity has to die.

• No more anonymous search.

• No more incognito window.

• No more asking the wrong question without raising the wrong flag.

It doesn’t end with “protecting” kids. It starts with them — and ends with control.

The chilling effect: obedience by design

The moment you know your activity is traceable — your behaviour changes.

You hesitate.
You avoid the odd article.
You don’t search that awkward question.
You think twice before commenting. Then maybe… you don’t comment at all.

And that’s the point.

It’s not just about surveillance. It’s about conditioning.
Not forced silence — just a steady erosion of confidence.
The slow creep of self-censorship. One click at a time.

What Fills the Void — when dissenting voices disappear?

We talk about protecting kids from “harmful content” — but what about the harms of withholding information altogether?

With print media in decline and libraries turning into museums, the internet and particularly social media, has become the primary window to the world.
Cut off that access — unless it’s government-approved — and what’s left?

• Mainstream TV programming.

• State-sanctioned curriculum.

• Propaganda, dressed up as education.

All carefully curated narratives — heavy on ideology and light on truth.

In a world where dissenting voices live online, removing that access doesn’t protect kids — it conditions them.

What we’ll end up with is generations raised on propaganda.

And then — just two years later at 18 — we expect them to vote.
No — even worse — in Australia we mandate their vote, or risk a fine.

On what objective information would these opinions be formed?
What critical thinking, what counterpoints, what real-world experience did they ever receive?

We're not raising citizens capable of critical thought.
We're raising citizens who agree — creating a crisis of consensus.

This isn’t speculation — it’s already happening

The UK has already passed its version of the Online Safety Bill.
And in just weeks the consequences are rolling in fast.

Millions of daily identity checks.
A surge in VPN use as people try to claw back basic privacy.
And prosecutions — real jail time — for speech that strays too far from government-approved lines.

People have been charged for Facebook posts that question immigration.
Others for criticising public institutions.
And behind it all: a growing digital infrastructure that links your words to your legal identity.

Another side effect? Blatant censorship.
Harmful content is a term so vague, so elastic, that platforms are now over-censor by default — not out of moral duty, but fear of entanglement.

When a breach could cost up to 10% of global turnover, is it any wonder they’re pulling the plug on anything even mildly controversial?

They were promised safety too.
What they got was surveillance — and government intrusion into their daily lives.

Australia still has a choice — but not for long

The deadline for implementation is set for December 2025.

If this system goes ahead, you will need to prove who you are — not just to speak, but to search and to stay informed.

This Bill isn’t about keeping teens off social media. It’s about building the gate, issuing the passes, and deciding who gets to enter the public square.

And it doesn’t stop at surveillance.
It reshapes what children know and what they can learn.
It conditions how young voters think.
It narrows the spectrum of thought until consensus becomes the only acceptable answer.

Once built, it won’t be dismantled.
Once normalised, it won’t be questioned.

So, the real question isn’t whether this proposal goes too far.
It’s whether we’re willing to live in a country where access to information is permission-based — and the next generation never knew it was any other way.

Do you really think they could pass a Digital ID law through the front door? Through honest debate? With public consent?

Of course not. And they know it.

Back in 1987, the government tried to introduce the Australia Card via referendum
— and the public gave them a resounding “no.”
Different decade, same agenda.

And this time, they’re trying to sneak it in through the back door.

They didn’t ask.
They didn’t explain.
And they sure as hell didn’t get consent.

So ask yourself:

Do you still trust our government?

Because “She’ll be right, mate” is for suckers.
And I refuse to believe Australia was built by suckers.

Despite the grim trajectory, this isn’t a done deal yet. There are serious uphill battles ahead of implementation — and they’re worth watching closely.

Technical limitations
The framework they’re proposing is deeply flawed and technically complex. Live, persistent age verification at scale isn’t just hard — it’s borderline unworkable. Especially without turning the internet into a biometric police state.

Platform pushback
Silicon Valley isn’t lining up to mutilate its business for a virtue-signalling backwater like Australia. Expect resistance. Some may threaten withdrawal — and a few may even follow through — but that’ll be a last resort.

The Trump Effect
Wherever you sit on the TDS scale, one thing’s clear: Trump backs free speech. Strongly.
Don’t be surprised if a second Trump administration offers tariff or tech incentives tied to platform neutrality — or applies pressure in some way to protect speech and limit censorship. It’s certainly not out of the question.

And as for Albo…
You’ve got to wonder why our slippery little socialist hasn’t met with Trump yet. It’s not just about tariffs — it’s AUKUS, energy, security, trade.
If our ties with what’s meant to be our strongest ally are this frosty, then Australia’s in more trouble than we think.

But here’s the thing — none of this gets you off the hook.

Hope is not a substitute for action. Platform resistance, technical roadblocks, even international pressure — they mean nothing if there’s silence at home.

The pushback has to come from us — the people this government is meant to serve.
And it starts when we stop waiting for permission.
Because if we don’t shake off the “she’ll be right” attitude and make noise now, they’ll keep coming — and next time, they won’t even pretend to ask.

Thomas down but not out

P1,11: Drought blamed for abattoir staff stand down

“The drought has sharply decreased sheep numbers, with recovery not expected before 2027” – Thomas Foods International

Let’s be honest — this story could have so easily gone off the rails into climate alarmism, so credit to The Courier for avoiding that detour. That said, it’s still a brutal blow for hundreds of workers in Lobethal now stood down without pay.

Whether you admire or loathe how Thomas Foods operates, the commercial reality is hard to ignore. If livestock numbers aren’t there, neither is the business case. That’s not to say the company is blameless — after all, this is the same business that took the insurance payout and moved much of its core processing out of Murray Bridge after the fire. Still, we can’t pretend the economics don’t matter.

The bigger question is what happens next. Let’s hope local jobs are reinstated as promised, and that this isn’t a permanent shift toward a leaner, foreign-heavy operation. Rural industries are already struggling to attract and retain workers—another hit like this could be a knockout punch for some families.

No Parking — A predictable mess

“Would it really have been so difficult to identify one or more suitable parking areas?” – John Tons

Some problems are hard to predict. This wasn’t one of them.

We’ve known for over a year that the Mt Barker hospital site would be under construction and that 250 car parks would be lost. So why was no off-site parking solution arranged in advance? Why are parents now hauling toddlers two blocks down the road while hospital patients circle like vultures for a park?

The Courier’s editorial calls it a ‘shame’ that a plan wasn’t in place beforehand. I’d go further — this was a basic operational requirement, and the failure to meet it has caused serious and ongoing disruption for families, patients, and staff.

The impact is widespread. Childcare staff are now acting as parking inspectors just to keep spots free for their own customers. Elderly patients are being dropped off alone while drivers go on parking hunts. Parents with young children are forced to walk long distances just to make drop-offs. I’ve personally dealt with this — and it’s worse than frustrating.

To their credit, Built (the contractor) tried to explore options like using Paterson Reserve. But as usual, council kicked the can down the road, and SA Health offered little in the way of meaningful logistics. A shuttle bus? Overflow parking? Rerouting contractors off-site? All of it should’ve been in place before a single fence went up.

Yes, the new $320 million hospital is a major investment, and yes, inconvenience was inevitable. But there’s a difference between unavoidable disruption and completely avoidable incompetence. We didn’t need hindsight to see this coming — just a little leadership.

The Courier rightly says everyone needs access to health services. That includes the ability to actually get there.

Page 6, 7: Letters to the Editor — A rare dose of honesty and dissent

👉 This week particularly the letters pages serves as a kind of pulse check on the community. This week’s contributions show a surprisingly frank and balanced spread of thought—some sharp, some shaky, but at least we’re seeing people engage.

• The parking saga at Mt Barker Hospital gets another clip from Ian Tonkin, and rightly so. If you’re forcing hospital staff and patients to pay for parking in the middle of a car park shortage, you’ve lost the plot. The absurdity writes itself.

• On the censorship and “facts” debate, there’s real heat — and wherever you may land on this issue it’s good to see discussion play out in public discourse. Letters from Gallash, Inkster and myself push back against the idea that truth is whatever the loudest credentialed expert says it is. That debate matters. We’re not meant to rubber-stamp the so called established views — we’re meant to test them. The key take away — If you’re scared of dissent, maybe your argument’s not as strong as you think.

• Jennifer Elsom’s piece on the tree saga in Stirling is also worth noting. A 100-year-old tree crashes down after being flagged as unsafe, and yet the Council had twice refused removal. This is bureaucracy at its worst — playing God with people’s safety in the name of green virtue.

• Meanwhile, the strip-mining of Hahndorf’s character continues. Hans Menz and Simone Downie both take aim at uninspired playground plans and reckless tree clearing. If council wants to promote the town as a unique destination, it should stop making it feel like every other generic suburb.

These pages show that the community is paying attention. The frustration is growing — not just about parking or playgrounds — but about the broader sense that decisions are being made by people who are insulated from consequence and immune to logic.

Let’s hope the editors keep publishing these letters. We need more light, less fog.

P12: Aquatic centre finished ahead of schedule

“It will deliver benefits for residents of all ages and abilities” – Mayor David Leach

On paper, this looks like a win — a $51 million aquatic centre, delivered ahead of schedule and under budget. Credit where it's due: that’s no small feat in today’s climate.

But here's the rub. While it’s nice to see a high-profile project come together so smoothly, it’s hard to ignore the glaring contrast elsewhere. Hahndorf is still choking on traffic. Roads across the district are in disrepair. Hospital parking is a rolling debacle. And yet, somehow, this got prioritised — complete with polished media releases and a quote from the Mayor beaming about “investment in our future.”

Forgive the cynicism, but this has all the hallmarks of a political showpiece that photographs well and cements names on plaques. No doubt the facility will be welcomed by many, especially families and those with mobility issues. But was this truly the most pressing need in a region still lacking the basics?

Let’s hope it delivers real, ongoing value — not just another entry in the Mayor’s highlight reel.

P13: 338 new house lots opening

“A natural extension” — Developer

Another week, another land release — this time 338 new lots at Clover Park, described as a “natural extension” of Mt Barker’s relentless urban sprawl.

Let’s be clear: this isn’t about leafy neighbourhood charm or balanced regional growth. It’s a numbers game — more rooftops, more ratepayers, more developer profits. And once again, it’s outpacing infrastructure at every turn.

Where’s the matching plan for roads, schools, emergency services and dare I say it, an appropriately sized hospital? Where’s the honest conversation about water supply, stormwater runoff, or the impact on local wildlife corridors? A pocket park and a landscaped basin don’t magically absorb 338 new households.

Developers talk of “community amenity” and “multi-year investment,” but residents know what this really means — more congestion on the roads, more pressure on already-stretched services, and less of the rural character that made the Hills desirable in the first place.

Mt Barker’s population is booming, yes. But growth without foresight isn’t progress. It’s policy failure.

Democracy — from the Greek demos (the people) and kratos (rule).
Literally, rule by the people.

Democracy — We’re told we live in one.

But if our government is meant to reflect the will of the people, something isn’t adding up.

At the last federal election, the Labor Party secured just 32.6% of the primary vote — barely a third of Australians. The Liberal Party, meanwhile, slumped to just 23.9%.

Together, barely half the country still backs either so-called major party — a total collapse in public faith.

Yet despite recording its lowest primary vote in over a century, Labor swept into power with full control of government.

Australia's “two-party preferred” model, backed by a preferential system distorts reality and buries dissent.

It manufactures consensus where none exists — a political magic trick that gives the illusion of majority rule, even when most voters didn’t vote for the winner.

That’s not representation — it’s redistribution.

And at its core, democracy depends on choice — real choice. Not just between candidates, but between ideas, directions, values. That only works when there’s a meaningful distinction between the parties.

Today, Australia has no effective opposition. Just factions of the same political class, offering variations of the same directionless drift.

And if you think that’s bad, consider what happened after the Voice referendum.

Australians were asked a clear question: Should there be a constitutionally enshrined Voice to Parliament?

Across every state but one, Australians rejected the idea. The national vote wasn’t close. There was no ambiguity. And yet, state governments like Victoria and South Australia have moved ahead with their own legislation to implement Voice-style advisory bodies anyway — as if the referendum never happened.

How can a system that bypasses the public will at every turn still call itself a democracy?

What has become clear is that we’re no longer governed by public consensus — we’re managed by political machines.

Machines that consult us when it’s convenient — and sideline us when it’s not.

And all the while, they rely on one thing to keep it going — the inherited belief that government still acts in our interest.

Most Australians grew up thinking public servants serve the public. That democracy protects the common good. But that trust — quiet, automatic, and passed down through generations — has been exploited.

Despite everything, many still believe that those in power are acting in good faith. That the system, while flawed, is fundamentally fair.

But unless we’re willing to confront just how far things have drifted, we’ll keep handing over our power to those who don’t deserve it.

And it raises a deeper question — one we can’t fully explore here, but can no longer ignore: Who are our politicians really working for?

Incompetence only gets you so far. The rest? Ground Control’s Planned Decline begins to pull back the curtain.

But here’s the thing — the system is still ours.

The mechanisms of democracy haven’t vanished. They’ve simply been obscured, distorted, and handed over to those who’ve mastered the art of manipulating them.

That doesn’t mean we abandon the process — it means we need to understand it more deeply than ever before. We must sharpen our awareness and learn to use every lever to our advantage— local councils, community movements, independent candidates, referendums, and particularly preference flows.

Democracy isn’t something you vote for once every few years. It’s something that must be defended daily.

It’s time we stopped treating elections like they're the end of our say — and started treating them as the beginning of our responsibility. If we don’t hold the system to account, it will continue to operate in someone else’s favour.

P3: City Centre Confusion

I didn’t see the Facebook posts questioning the design, but I can certainly detect where the money’s going — straight into consultants. At $100 million and counting, the real beneficiaries appear to be the planners, consultants, and developers — not the ratepayers.

Originally described as a civic building, the project now supposedly isn’t even primarily for council use. Instead, it’s shape-shifted into a co-working hub, university annex, youth space, events venue, and maybe even a tech incubator. It’s turning into an everything-to-everyone project — which usually means it will serve no one particularly well.

It looks like a strategy of promising unachievable utopia to try and secure broad-based support. Glossy vision, unclear purpose — and once again, the community’s voice being painted over by spin.

So the community is invited to comment — but it seems the scope is limited to layout and internal planning, not the capacity or scale of service. It’s hard to see how that addresses the real issue. At this point, we’re being asked to help pick the curtains while the foundation’s already been poured.

Facts matter: 👉 Some rather pointed critique from David Baker. He may well have read my letter Fade to Silence discussing various forms of censorship — but the essence seems to have been lost on him. His piece isn’t about facts — it’s about control and shutting down discussion. Rather than engage with the argument, he brands it “misinformation.”

In my letters I've questioned the wisdom of taxing unrealised gains, highlighted the social cost of censorship, pointed to the real environmental challenges beyond carbon emissions, and exposed the global agendas quietly shaping local policy. These are not conspiracies — they're real-world concerns, playing out in legislation, tax policy, and the institutions we rely on.

David’s letter is classic deflection. In contrast I’m attempting to promote deeper thought and real debate.

PR Fluff’n’Stuff

P10: New targets for council boss

Gee, I sure hope The Courier is getting staff benefits. As the unofficial PR arm of the council machine, it’s the least they deserve.

We’re told the Adelaide Hills Council CEO met last year’s targets — but the review is confidential. Clearly the KPIs didn’t include fiscal responsibility and keeping rate rises down to CPI. There's certainly no meaningful transparency for the ratepayers footing the bill. “Quarterly updates” and “financial literacy programs” might tick boxes, but they don’t tell us whether leadership is delivering real outcomes.

Apparently stakeholder engagement is up — this seems to be some sort of code based on the lacking communication and strained relationships in the chamber.

Until we see KPIs tied to real-world accountability — like service delivery, ratepayer satisfaction, or staying within budget — this is nothing more than managing the optics of a rather dysfunction situation.

P12: Law proves pen mightier than sword

The SA government has followed communist Victoria’s lead and decided that machetes and medieval swords now require permits. Anyone caught with one — even a decorative blade — faces two years jail or a $20,000 fine. Yes, really.

You’d be forgiven for thinking the streets were being overrun by knights in chainmail. SA’s new laws now treat medieval swords like contraband, while the real threats — the criminals and repeat offenders misusing weapons — get little more than press releases and wrist slaps.

Please someone — make it make sense.

A sad story indeed. After limping along for months with empty shelves, the closure has simply swapped one misery for another. There’s only so many times you can walk in hoping to support a local business, only to find nothing to buy. Let’s hope the next operator can do better — for themselves, and for Hahndorf.

First up:

Roads? — Apparently we don’t need them

P1: Council left doing the heavy lifting

Mt Barker councillor calls for urgent arterial road upgrades... and rightly so. If one was to take guidance from the State government, Adelaide’s fastest growing urban region doesn’t need major arterial roads — or decent public transport for that matter.

• Cr Rebecca Hewett deserves credit for calling out the mismatch between growth and infrastructure, but this story also reveals just how much government inertia the council is up against.

• The State's $40m roundabout band-aid doesn't begin to address the bottleneck at Adelaide Road. And if the best Transport can offer is 'indirect' benefits, then it's no wonder congestion keeps worsening.

• Mayor Leach’s dismissiveness about the motion is telling. Residents are not interested in inter-council turf wars — they want action. Residents don’t need more reports to identify the issues. What’s needed is funding, fast-tracked planning approvals, and State-Federal pressure to deliver.

P2: Opinion - Growing Problems

The Courier editorial finally hits a rare note of realism. It stops short of naming political names, but the message is clear — Mount Barker’s infrastructure is running years behind its population, and neither tier of government can afford to fumble the next phase.

What’s missing is accountability. Who failed to act when the warning signs were obvious? Who approved subdivision after subdivision without securing funding for arterial upgrades?

👉 We don’t need more reports — we need political will to act on it. Without that, this will become just another well-phrased article collecting dust while the gridlock worsens.

Here we go again. Another by-law and another reach into the lives of ordinary residents. The more we normalize government approvals for simple lifestyle choices, the more we invite intrusion into the rest of our lives.

Mt Barker and Adelaide Hills Councils head to the polls again.

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to work out our councils are in real trouble. And the 'toxic culture' is just the beginning. Constant by-elections, resignations citing bullying, and infighting over pay rises all point to a broken culture that no amount of procedural gloss can hide.

It’s clear that ratepayers are footing the bill for all of this dysfunction — $55,000 per election — and getting little in return. The steady churn of councillors also raises serious questions about leadership, morale, and whether anyone in these chambers is focused on long-term service over short-term scuffles.

If local government can't even hold itself together, how is it meant to tackle the issues that really matter such as infrastructure, housing, or community support?

Smokey and the Band-Aid

Whatever you think of tobacco, this isn’t about smokes. It’s the stench of process erosion and State overreach if you ask me. Granting the State power to bypass courts and crush livelihoods is a slippery slope. Today it’s vapes — tomorrow it could be something far more political.

This article is a textbook example of a project that sounds sensible — until you start asking questions the Courier didn’t.

– Why 4.99?
Funny how these projects always come in just under the 5 MVA threshold. That’s not an accident — it’s the cut-off point for triggering more intensive environmental and planning oversight.

– Who’s backing it?
Lunio Energy is name-dropped without background. Are they a serious operator or a shell for a larger play? What's their track record on safety and delivery?

– What’s the lifecycle cost?
Battery storage is often pitched as clean and green — but lithium iron phosphate still has embedded energy costs, supply chain concerns, and future recycling issues.

– And who benefits?
Does the community actually see a reduction in grid pressure or prices — or is this just a grid-level export with Lunio Energy receiving the benefits?

– And who’s paying?
Silly question. We all are — courtesy of the Federal battery subsidy scheme.

This is nothing more than subsidies in disguise.

Apologies for the transmission lag — this edition got caught in the vortex of government spin we’re faced with on a daily basis. We’re back on frequency now, with full diagnostic sweep underway. Keeping it brief.

First up:

Mount Barker Hospital: Dead on Arrival

P1: Too Little, too late

Only a government could sink millions into a 'new' hospital that’s already outdated and inadequate before it’s even delivered.

It’s not just a case of being too little, too late — it’s symptomatic of a planning culture that responds to crisis only after it’s already overwhelmed, then calls it a win. A 102-bed hospital for one of the fastest-growing regions in the state? Did the State Government even bother consulting the Greater Adelaide Regional Plan (GARP) — their own blueprint for population growth in the Hills?

Local doctors warn the place will be obsolete within two years. The union says it needs double the current ED staff. Queue the recycled spin: “It’s a step in the right direction.” If this is forward momentum, we’re marching backwards into the future.

Hill Tourism: → Harold Gallasch doesn't waste words — he mirrors the sentiments I expressed in the previous edition but with more specifics. 🙏

For 40 years, Hahndorf one of South Australia's most visited destinations has been pleading for two things: a bypass and off-street parking. Both have been promised. Neither delivered. Meanwhile, some twat in a CBD office wheels out a "grandiose promotional scheme" that will only make the existing problems worse. As Harold points out, Hahndorf is tourism resilience. All it asks for is maintenance, preservation, and a bypass that's two decades overdue.

Maybe the real tourism slogan should be: Drive past Hahndorf — there’s nowhere to park anyway.

Get on board nuclear: → “The truth: nuclear, is the only real green energy” — there’s nothing more that needs to be said. 🙏

Cancer Risks: Robert McCormick raises a question too few dare to ask: is our modern diet — packed with synthetic additives, engineered fats, and chemical preservatives — quietly fuelling the rise in early-age cancers?

He’s not being alarmist. He’s being observant. It’s a call to connect the dots. Because if food is medicine, then what exactly are we prescribing ourselves every time we open a packet?

It’s Enough To Make You Irate

P8: Rate rise above CPI

This edition it’s Mt Barker Council’s turn to vote in a 3.55% rate hike — and like AHC, this one’s also well above CPI, dressed up as ‘smoothing.’ Smooth for who, exactly?

According to the Courier, the strategy is part of a three-year plan to lift rates at or above CPI, even as locals question the value. No curbside hard waste. No major capital works. Just higher bills and vague reassurances about financial sustainability.

But here’s what didn’t make the page: at least one councillor voted against the rise. So no, it wasn’t a unanimous decision. It was a majority choice to squeeze residents harder during a cost-of-living crisis — and call it responsible governance.

Paying more but getting less? That’s not strategy. That’s shrinkflation in disguise.

Ditto for Strathalbyn

P9: Alexandrina approves 3.05% rate rise

I’m not saying the CPI is fake — I’m just saying it seems to be the only number councils consistently ignore. When all three major local councils in the region blow past Adelaide’s inflation benchmark in the same budget cycle, the game’s up. Either CPI is a meaningless fiction, or local government finance is.

Alexandrina’s “sustainability plan” comes with a 3.05% hike — admittedly lower than Mt Barker’s and Adelaide Hills, but still above inflation and still justified with a wad of consultant-speak. And like the others, it punts any hope of a real operating surplus several years downfield.

The transmission is clearing. One more backlog to go — then we’re back to real-time scanning, no static and no lag.

The Globalist Blueprint:

Ask most Australians when we gave up our sovereignty and you'd likely get a blank stare. The truth is, the process began quietly in 1975 with adoption of the Lima Declaration — a UN-led agreement committing developed nations like Australia to transfer manufacturing capacity to the developing world.

But for Australia, the result was deliberate dismantling of our industrial base. Factories closed, trades declined, and we shifted from a country that built things to one that imported them — from self-reliance to strategically exposed.

And the jobs and prosperity didn’t come back — at least, not the kind that built families or communities.

How It Happened:

This wasn’t an accident. It was policy. Gough Whitlam’s government signed on enthusiastically, embedding foreign priorities into domestic law without public debate. Successive governments, on both sides, followed suit — where each was complicit in the erosion of our national strength. Compromised leadership became the norm, with too few willing to challenge the globalist consensus.

And let’s not forget — manufactured consensus is how power hides in the shadows of politeness. And questioning it? Apparently that makes you the problem.

From Clever Country to Hollow Core:

The damage didn’t happen overnight. But the direction was locked in. Under the banners of fairness and sustainability, we hollowed out our productive base and turned away from the things that once made us strong.

We were told to become a “clever country” and started churning out degrees — the catch being they came with a side of ideological indoctrination.

What we’ve ended up with is a fragile economy, one overexposed to global shocks and unable to meet basic needs.

The results are all around us:
Soaring cost of living. A housing market in crisis. Good jobs replaced with gig work and slogans. A growing shortage of skilled trades — and no plan to fix it.

We imported the problem. We exported the solution.

Still — through it all, no one in power dares to ask the obvious: How did we get here?

The True Origin of Power:

The deindustrialisation of Australia wasn’t driven solely by market forces, as we’re often told and led to believe.

It wasn’t drift — it was direction. A deliberate shift, driven by unelected international bodies and signed off by compliant “leaders” too timid or too captured to resist.

And the same forces haven’t gone away. Today, the UN are still pushing their various agendas onto Australia — The Voice, identity politics, climate alarmism, Agenda 2030 — each one cloaked in virtue, but leading us further from sovereignty.

The World Health Organization (WHO) and others are pushing pandemic treaties and regulatory amendments such as the International Health Regulations (IHR) that would hand even more power to those we didn’t elect — and can’t remove.

What’s at Stake:

This isn’t about nostalgia and pining for the Good Old Days.
It’s about survival.

A sovereign nation must be able to stand on its own feet — economically, legislatively, and strategically. We’ve given up too much ground already.

To reverse our decline, we must first name its cause and those behind it — and the courage to do that is the first act of resistance.

We ignore the ongoing threats to the sovereignty of our country at our peril.

A Manufactured Crisis

Australia is on the path to self-inflicted harm — one marketed as environmental salvation and cloaked in virtue. Net Zero has become the new secular religion: preached in schools, parroted in parliament, and reinforced by media. The catch?
It's working Australians who are paying the price.

Through years of outsourced parenting and agenda-driven classrooms we have infused generations with climate catastrophism and filled their heads with fear-driven narratives of a dying planet and moral failure.

No wonder they’re crying out for urgent action. That was always the plan.

But when fear drives policy, scrutiny dies. Enter Net Zero: a pre-packaged solution cloaked in a moral shield — immune to question and framed as the only righteous path. Like a Marvel hero of fantastical proportions, it’s been cast as the planet’s last hope. The problem? It’s pure fantasy — a blockbuster illusion with no real-world backbone.

The Costs

The Big Lie: “Cheap Renewables”

We’re constantly told — Renewables provide the cheapest power — but that’s a lie.

The illusion of affordability exists only because of massive, multilayered taxpayer subsidies. These costs aren’t itemised at the checkout — they’re buried in bureaucracy, masked in energy bills, and deferred onto future generations through ballooning national debt. Australians are footing the bill for Net Zero not once, but over and over:

– Through direct government grants and subsidies to developers
– Through higher energy bills, inflated by “green schemes” and hidden charges
– Through taxpayer-funded transmission projects to service remote wind and solar zones
– Through rising debt that will ultimately fall on the next generation
– Through the economic loss of gutted industries that once powered this nation

“Cheap” doesn’t mean affordable. It means someone else pays — until they don’t.

The beneficiaries?

Mostly foreign-owned energy firms. This isn’t energy reform — it’s a national wealth transfer disguised in green branding.

In 2024 alone, Australians paid $659 million in hidden charges to solar installations — under the Large-scale Renewable Energy Target. 72% of those projects are foreign-owned, meaning we’re subsidising offshore profit under the illusion of environmental virtue.

It doesn’t end there. Transmission costs — needed to ferry intermittent power from remote solar and wind farms — are projected to blow out by 55%, adding even more to household bills. They’re not savings — they’re wealth transfers. From working Australians to foreign multinationals, wrapped in green branding and sold to us as progress.

The Impacts

Wind and solar have been glorified as inherently virtuous. But once you account for the land consumed, displaced farming, sprawling transmission corridors, and overbuild to compensate for intermittency, the green halo fades.

What we end up with is a massive industrial footprint that devastates the very planet we’re apparently trying to save.

Even the term renewables is misleading. The sun may rise each day and the wind may blow, but the infrastructure to harvest it — solar panels, wind turbines, inverters, batteries — are anything but renewable. These systems come with heavy environmental and economic costs, require replacement within decades, and demand vast amounts of land, mining, and global shipping. This isn’t sustainability. It’s deferred destruction — repackaged as virtue.

Australia’s Net Zero policy isn’t reducing emissions — it’s outsourcing them.

We ship coal to China, where it powers factories making the very solar panels and wind turbines we import. We burn the coal offshore, then buy back the illusion of virtue at twice the cost. It’s not progress. It’s self-sabotage.

The Orchestrated Illusion

What keeps Net Zero alive isn’t success — it’s orchestration. A symphony of government agencies, media outlets, academics, and corporate PR firms all playing from the same score. The result isn’t truth — it’s manufactured harmony.

No major party questions it or offers any alternative.
The media doesn’t investigate. Debate is absent. Dissent is discredited.

This isn’t science — it’s theatre. And we’re all paying for tickets to a show that never delivers.

Behind the slogans lies coercion. Renewables are pushed with Mafia-style tactics — subsidies for compliance, penalties for resistance, and relentless pressure on regional communities to surrender land, lifestyle, and livelihood. Transmission lines now cut across once-productive farmland, often against the will of those who live there.

Cloaked in moral shield, this agenda silences criticism and brands dissenters as anti-science.

Capital city-based urbanites, detached from the realities of food and energy production, now vote against the very people who sustain them. The connection to land has been lost — eroded by geography and ideology.

We’re told the land isn’t really ours anyway. So we moralise from a distance, blind to the damage, convinced we’re saving the planet as we sabotage both it and the dwindling minority still living in stewardship of it.

The Religion

The Net Zero push has filled a spiritual vacuum. As traditional faith declines, many haven’t stopped believing — they’ve simply found a new religion. The climate cause offers saints and sinners, rituals and commandments, and promises of salvation. It offers meaning without God. And like all substitute religions, it tolerates no heresy — only unquestioned obedience.

Australians haven’t become secular — they’ve become converted.

Net Zero isn’t a policy. It’s a belief system. One hostile to dissent and funded by those who can least afford it.

Unless we find the courage to question it — morally, economically, and spiritually — we’ll continue down this path of intentional decline — congratulating ourselves all the way to the poorhouse.

Meanwhile, other nations are abandoning Green New Deal fantasies and powering their economies with cheap baseload energy — often using coal and gas supplied by Australia. The irony writes itself.

But it’s more than ironic — it’s hypocritical. We export the very resources we deny to ourselves. We sell coal and gas abroad while forcing Australians to endure higher prices, unstable supply, and fantasy-driven policy at home. It’s not environmental leadership. It’s national self-sabotage.

Welcome to the dangerous new era of superannuation — where you're forced to pay tax on gains that haven't been realised and may never be realised. That’s the outcome of Labor’s latest tax grab, targeting Australians with super balances over $3 million—and possibly $2 million if the Greens have their way.

While your first instinct may be to shrug this off — “$2–3 million? That’s for the rich.” But don’t be so sure.

This threshold won’t be indexed to inflation, meaning its real-world value will shrink over time. What seems out of reach today could trap you — or your children — tomorrow.

With the compulsory employer super guarantee now locked in at 12%, even an average-income worker entering the workforce today could cross the $3 million line by retirement — simply by investing responsibly over a 40-year career. This isn’t a tax on the elite. It’s a ticking time bomb for the next generation.

Of course the Labor government has couched this as a 'modest' reform — but there’s nothing modest about taxing unrealised gains.

No other country globally taxes unrealised gains as it's considered unfair, complex, and distortionary. Australia would be one of the first developed nations to cross this line — and not in a good way.

And there’s nothing modest about a threshold that silently shrinks each year thanks to inflation. This is pure overreach wrapped in soft language.

This isn’t just a tax — it’s a shift in philosophy: from taxing income to taxing ownership. It punishes self-reliance and middle-class values.

Responsible savers and investors are being treated like cash cows simply for planning ahead. And perhaps most tellingly, this policy disproportionately affects those with self-managed super funds — Australians who have chosen to manage their own retirement savings rather than hand it over to large institutions. The more super that’s independently managed, the less control government and union-linked funds have over the flow of investment capital. This is particularly inconvenient for a Labor government heavily aligned with union-dominated industry super funds.

Once again we see this isn’t just about revenue — it’s about control.

You could owe tax on a paper gain — even if your investments haven’t been sold and may later fall in value. These “gains” are often illusory, especially when inflation is ignored.

Taxing phantom profits while quietly benefiting from currency erosion isn’t economic stewardship — it’s fiscal sleight of hand.

Taxing the unreal is more than a policy flaw — it’s a financial illusion…

Worse still, politicians are exempt. Those on defined benefit pensions, including federal MPs, won’t be subject to this new tax. One rule for them, another for the rest of us. It’s enough to make your blood boil.

Back to the slippery slope — the precedent here is dangerous.
If unrealised gains can be taxed inside super today, what’s to stop the next government targeting your investments, your property — even your family home?

This policy doesn’t just threaten retirement plans. It also incentivises wealthy individuals and high-value investors to relocate to jurisdictions with more stable and transparent tax systems. As capital, talent and wealthy individuals flow out, the tax burden shifts further onto everyday Australians. It punishes diligence, erodes trust, and undermines the very behaviours that once made Australia strong.

This is short-term politics dressed up as reform — risking long-term damage to a system that once rewarded responsibility.
